Since 1972, the Fathers of Saint Joseph Abbey have been conducting five-day Ignatian retreats for men, giving them the opportunity to share in the riches of their contemplative life by means of this «admirable book of Exercises (...) which has made its mark as the most wise and most universal code of laws of salvation and of the perfection of souls, as the untarnishable source of the most elevated and solid piety, as an irresistible goad and alert guide for aiding souls to reform themselves and to attain the summits of the spiritual life» (Pope Pius XI, Mens Nostra, Dec. 20, 1929).

The call to holiness can only be heard and followed in the silence of adoration before the transcendence of God. We must admit that we all need this silence filled with adored presence [...] All of us, believers and unbelievers alike, need to learn the value of silence which allows the Other (God) to speak when and as He pleases, and which allows us to understand His word.
In practice this demands great fidelity to liturgical and personal prayer, to the time set apart for mental prayer and contemplation, Eucharistic adoration, monthly retreats and spiritual exercises.
John Paul II, Apostolic Exhortation on Consecrated Life, March 25, 1996
In our communities of the Missionaries of Charity we have, from the beginning, made the Spiritual Exercises of Saint Ignatius, which are very beautiful and very fruitful. I recommend them to all: they are not reserved to religious. They are all the better when the priest who gives them remains very faithful, with much care, to the method given by Saint Ignatius himself.
Blessed Teresa of Calcutta, September 14, 1986
